The Senior Merchandise Inventory Planner is responsible for managing the merchandise inventory for assigned product categories across all channels to achieve corporate demand, inventory turn, fill rate and margin goals. In addition to managing complex/critical categories within the merchandising and planning areas, this role will have responsibility for growing, leading, and mentoring at least one direct report.



  • By Season, create forecasts that support Demand, Shipped Sales, Inventory and Margin plans per Sequence/Season timelines.
  • Use Planning Tool applications to:
    • Accurately process, predict and analyze product demand
    • Maintain and update special category and product curves as needed.
    • Provide projections to vendors as needed per lead time requirements
    • Maintain or review various forecasting reports
    • Generate and analyze Forecast*21 reporting to assist in team and performance.
  • In collaboration with the Planning Director, create appropriate receipt and inventory plans
  • Re-trending as needed based on demand over and under forecast
  • Manage new product minimum order requirements
  • In collaboration with the Merchant, create exit strategy when introducing new items that are replacing existing inventory
  • Develop proficiency in forecasting assigned categories
  • Meet all deadlines including those on the Sequence/Merchandise Offer Timeline Schedule.
  • Develop strong partnerships with vendors to meet all business needs.

Merchandise Inventory Planning

  • Manage merchandise inventory utilizing departmental planning parameters
  • Ensure product availability to achieve agreed to Fill Rates by season.
  • Maintain PO and inventory information and reports to ensure timely delivery of merchandise
  • Maintain quality of inventory:
    • Hold monthly review meetings with Merchants to make recommendations for improvement of inventory position and sell through
    • Maintain margin goals.
  • Meet all deadlines including those on the Sequence/Merchandise Offer Timeline Schedule.
  • Maintain all reports, which manage inventory levels and maintenance of backorders
  • Review and keep abreast of Vendor and Product Compliance issues.
  • Produce performance analysis at the item level and/or vendor level when appropriate

Category Assortment Planning

  • Partner with the Merchant team on product issues, history, size assortment, placement of product, and vendor concerns. 
  • Develop seasonal forecasts for Key Items and new introductions
  • Partner with the team to provide Merchandising with feedback on catalogue covers and hot spot selections.
  • Analyze and recommend rationalization for SKU and overall product offering to Merchandising.


  • Work closely with Merchant Team to forecast, plan and order all offers by channel to achieve category goals.
  • Collaborate with all other departments to encourage best practices and resolve issues concerning systems, products, vendors, presentation and inventory levels.
  • Network with the Direct Tech support team and other Forecast*21 Users to keep abreast of system changes and communicate system issues.
  • Vendors & Manufacturers:
    • Develop partnerships and periodic communication to support best inventory position, forecasts, trends and orders. 
    • Communicate needed ETA’s to support offers, missed or incomplete deliveries and process or lead time adjustment
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and lead any teams required to improve it
  • Grow, Lead and Mentor direct report(s) in planning skill sets.

  • 5+ years’ experience in merchandise inventory planning, buying or forecasting in RETAIL
  • Supervisory or Leadership experience a plus
  • Direct to Consumer, multi-channel retail or mail order environment a plus
  • Advanced Excel skills and a high proficiency with all Microsoft Office
  • Experience working with both domestic and international merchandise manufacturer vendor base
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal


  • A BA/BS degree is required.
